MINNESOTA STATE FLAG REDESIGN
In 2024, the state of Minnesota sought to redesign the official state flag through an open-call, public design contest. The three flag designs below were submitted for official consideration.
These reconceptualized Minnesota state flag designs seek to be attractive when hung on a flagpole, or when hung vertically, and/or when imprinted upon a variety of objects (i.e., stickers, pins, physical insignia, websites & documents).

MINNESOTA STATE FLAG REDESIGN, 01
Rectangular, 2-point pennant. Pennant style is distinctive and attractive. Also, right edge mimics the state’s eastern geographical border.
Large blue center field signifies rivers, lakes & other bodies of water. Top green border signifies Minnesota’s forests, and bottom yellow border signifies golden fields heavy with crops.
8-point star signifies the North Star, suggests a snowflake, and strategically repeats 2-point pennant shape.
8-point star’s style purposely pulls from star designs in quilts, and this gesture seeks to suggest Minnesota’s early history.
Yellow in the star signifies light. Blue signifies water/snow. Green signifies the land. A multi-colored star also seeks to symbolize Minnesota’s racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity.
MINNESOTA STATE FLAG REDESIGN, 02
Rectangular, 2-point pennant. Pennant style is distinctive and attractive. Also, right edge mimics the state’s eastern geographical border.
Multiple stripes of different hues of blue placed diagonally in the flag’s center field seek to symbolize the movement & flow of water (i.e., Mississippi River, lakes). Green borders signify forests and land as well as the banks of a river.
8-point yellow star signifies the North Star and strategically repeats 2-point pennant shape.
8-point star’s style purposely pulls from star designs in quilts, and this gesture seeks to suggest Minnesota’s early history.

This design utilizes a traditional rectangular flag shape.
Large blue center field signifies rivers, lakes & other bodies of water.
Wide white borders signify Minnesota’s unique snowy winters.
8-point multi-colored star signifies the North Star and also suggests a snowflake shape.
8-point star’s style purposely pulls from star designs in quilts, and this gesture seeks to suggest Minnesota’s early history.
Yellow in the star signifies light. Blue signifies water/snow. Green signifies the land. A multi-colored star also seeks to symbolize Minnesota’s racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity.
